Regional GDP another benchmark for new Govt

Source: National Party – Headline: Regional GDP another benchmark for new Govt

Regional GDP figures out today from Stats NZ provide a further benchmark for the new Government to live up to, National Party Regional Development Spokesperson Paul Goldsmith says.

Growth figures of 9 per cent in the Bay of Plenty, 8.2 per cent in each of the Waikato and Northland, 7.9 per cent in Southland and 7.1 per cent in Otago in the year to March 2017 are clear proof that the regions have been thriving and not struggling as the rhetoric would have it,” Mr Goldsmith says.

“For New Zealand’s sake, we need that growth to continue. The challenge for the new Government is to keep these numbers up and not do anything to stuff them up.

“The previous Government’s consistent sensible economic policies have encouraged investment in the regions and brought in skilled people to work for growing regional companies.

“The new Government clearly needs to stay the course with that approach and not head down the haphazard inconsistent path of Shane Jones which will only discourage private sector investment.

“Regional GDP growth has now averaged 26.2 per cent over the last five years while Northland has grown at 30 per cent.

“The figures also contain a warning for the anti-oil and gas crowd. They show that Taranaki is our wealthiest region but also hasn’t grown much recently. It would only take a continuation of the sort of rhetoric we’ve seen in the last week to send Taranaki backwards.

“Regional development is all about applying predictable coherent economic policies that businesses can base their investment decisions on, and building the infrastructure that people actually use.

“If the coalition Government still says the regions are struggling I look forward to seeing their growth figures exceed these in the years ahead.”

Massey University Press publishes ‘Dear Oliver’

Source: Massey University – Press Release/Statement:

Headline: Massey University Press publishes ‘Dear Oliver’

Letters are time capsules, portals to other times and places. Rarely written in today’s world of instant communication, letters record domestic dramas and reflect great historical moments. They can be by turns gossipy and intimate, grandiose and business-like.

When acclaimed writer, film director and historian Peter Wells discovered a cache of family letters amongst his elderly mother’s effects, he found the means to retrace his family history. English born, the Northes were hard-working, entrepreneurial folk, swept out to New Zealand during the great nineteenth-century human diaspora from Britain. They settled in Napier, and their upwardly-mobile trajectory — from servant class to merchants and landowners — was not untypical. Individually, their stories are anything but.

Digging deep into their stories, examining letters from the past and writing a letter to the future, Wells recounts a rich and, at times, heart-breaking Pākehā family history. The Northes’ military origins caught them up in the New Zealand Wars, the Anglo-Boer war and World War One. They also lived through the Depression and the devastating Napier earthquake of 1931. There was army desertion, suicide, adultery, AIDS, secrets and lies. There was also success, prosperity and rising social status.

As well as sharing the stories of his ancestors, Wells records his own history, not least coming out to his parents via a letter from the UK when he was in his early twenties. Wells talks about his close relationship with his mother — a woman with her own secrets — the complexity of his feelings for his emotionally absent father and his hero worship of his adored older brother. Colourful and intriguing, Dear Oliver is tender, poignant, engaging and revealing, the work of one of this country’s finest writers.

Peter Wells recently came to national attention with the publication of “Hello Darkness”, a series of moving Facebook posts/diary entries about finding himself in the cancer ward. These were latterly published on popular news website, The Spinoff.

About the author

Peter Wells is a writer of fiction and non-fiction, and a writer/ director in film. His fiction looks at a world of secrets, identity, subterfuge and illusion, frequently using the lens of a gay narrator. His first book, Dangerous Desires, won the Reed Fiction Award, the NZ Book Award, and PEN Best New Book in Prose in 1992. His memoir Long Loop Home won the 2002 Montana New Zealand Book Award for Biography, and he has won many awards for his work as a film director. He is co-founder of the Auckland Writers Festival. In 2006, Wells was made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to literature and film. His most recent histories examined William Colenso, a resident of Napier, and Kereopa Te Rau, the Pai Mārire follower who was hanged in Napier for murdering Reverend Carl Völkner. Dear Oliver brings to an end this Napier trilogy.

Pressure building on Govt to halt employment law changes

Source: National Party – Headline: Pressure building on Govt to halt employment law changes

Time is running out for employers to submit on Labour’s first sweeping changes to employment law, National Party Workplace Relations Spokesperson Michael Woodhouse says.

“Business owners and managers only have until Easter to submit on these proposals which will result in significantly increased powers for unions in the workplace,” Mr Woodhouse says.

“The changes will create all sorts of problems for small and medium sized business owners. They tilt the playing field in favour of unions with new requirements to conclude bargaining, keep paying in full those on partial strikes, and requiring employers in an industry to bargain together if that’s what the union wants.

“All up there are at least 10 union-friendly changes that will only slow down job and wage growth. And that’s before we get to the severe new restrictions on 90 day trials.

“We have added 245,000 jobs in this country over the last two calendar years and these changes fly in the face of that reality.”

Mr Woodhouse says employers and workers can get help with their submission by going to the www.protectnzjobs.co.nz.

“There is a submission form which clearly lays out the changes so submitters can select which of them they most oppose.

“I’m surprised how many people I talk to who still aren’t aware of these changes. The Protect NZ Jobs website is an easy way to get up to speed quickly, so you don’t wake up later and find out it has all already happened.

“The Government still hasn’t explained why these changes make any sense for the New Zealand economy, workers or employers.

“That’s because there is absolutely no justification beyond being a simple payoff for Labour’s union supporters at the expense of everyone else.

“New Zealanders need to reject Labour’s pro-union law changes now or there will be even more harmful reforms later in the year, including the ability of the Government to dictate pay rates across entire industries.”

New seal to be laid on SH1 through the Brynderwyn Hills this weekend

Source: New Zealand Transport Agency – Press Release/Statement:

Headline: New seal to be laid on SH1 through the Brynderwyn Hills this weekend

This final layer of seal will improve the road’s skid resistance and improve its waterproofing to ensure a resilient and long lasting road surface, says the Transport Agency’s Senior Manager Project Delivery, Chris Hunt.

The work is part of the Brynderwyn Improvements Project which has improved safety on the busy state highway by widening the road and shoulders, removing tight corners and installing 14 kms of safety barriers along the edge of the road and the centre line to separate north and south bound traffic.

Work will start on at 7pm Sunday night and run through till 6am, says Mr Hunt.

There will be more overnight work on Monday 26 March from 7pm to 6am.

On both nights, the road will remain open but there will be stop/go traffic management in place and a 30 km/hour speed limit along the 4.6 kilometre stretch of SH1. Drivers can expect a delay of up to 5 minutes.

The sealing work will continue during the day on Tuesday 27 March and Wednesday 28 March between 7:30am and 5pm.

There will be traffic management in place with a contraflow, which means there will be one lane in both directions and a 50 km/hour speed limit. Delays are expected to be minimal.

The Brynderwyns work is in addition to repair and resealing work on the three Mata Bridges further north on SH1 between Ruakaka and Oakleigh. This work is also due to start on Sunday night and run for four nights.

Both sets of work are weather dependent and may be postponed at short notice.

The Transport Agency thanks motorists for their patience and understanding and urges them to allow extra time for their journey or reschedule it to avoid delays.

Please follow the directions of the road crews and keep to the speed limits to ensure the safety of road crews and all other road users.
