The road will initially open to a single lane during day light hours at the slip site and there will be stop/go traffic management in place. The site will be continuously monitored to ensure the area remains safe for people to travel through.

However, our contractors have discovered that some additional work should be done before the busy spring and summer period. With the school holidays starting in just a week’s time it has been decided to complete the current section by working this Friday night also, then carry out tidy up work next week during the day, with delays of up to 10 minutes for bridge users.

Contractors are on site clearing the slip, and geotechnical engineers are currently assessing the stability of the site. Until those assessments have been competed it is too early to predict when the road will be able to be safely re-opened to traffic.
We will continue to provide updates on our social media and the NZTA website.
If travelling, we ask motorists to use a SH35 as an alternative route or delay travel.

The 120m-long underpass is a two-lane link underneath the Maungatapu roundabout. A temporary 50km/h speed restriction will be in place through the underpass, and the new traffic lights will be operating at the Welcome Bay Road and Welcome Bay Link Road intersection.
