Headline: Cameras inside Waterview Tunnels to ensure safe speeds

Safety cameras have been operating in enforcement mode at the entrances and exits of the twin tunnels since they were opened in July 2017. The safety cameras inside the tunnels have also been monitoring travel speeds since July 2017, and will now be used to enforce the 80km/h speed limit inside the tunnels themselves, while the cameras at the tunnel entrances and exits will be switched off.

Headline: UPDATE – Expect delays on SH2 near Te Puna this weekend

This work is a continuation of the tree felling that occurred last weekend. We remind motorists this is a hazardous operation that requires all traffic to be stopped while each tree is felled. Stop/go traffic management will be in place, with a 30km/h temporary speed limit through the work site.

While a final design hasn’t been confirmed, Project Manager Lonnie Dalzell says the indicative route sees the new road run from near the western entry of the closed SH3 gorge route, cross the Ruahine Ranges north of the Gorge, and reconnect to SH3 at Woodville.

Headline: NZTA seeking community input for SH2 Safety improvements

The NZ Transport Agency is investigating ways to improve safety and keep traffic moving as the Wairarapa region grows, and it is inviting the community to have their say.
The NZ Transport Agency’s SH2 Masterton to Carterton team will be at Masterton’s Solway Primary School, between 2.30pm to 4.30pm on Wednesday 8 August, and at the Carterton Events Centre, between 10am to 2pm on Saturday 11 August, to share information on possible improvements and get feedback and ideas from the community.
“This stretch of SH2 is part of a key route between the Wellington region and the north,” NZTA Regional Transport Systems Manager Mark Owen says.
“It’s important for our communities, our economic development and tourism. With the increasing volume of traffic, some intersections, speed and roadside hazards like poles or ditches mean it’s also a high-risk road.”
Between 2007 and 2016, 17 people were seriously injured in crashes on the road between Masterton and Carterton. The majority of these injuries were caused by drivers running off the road and into ditches, hitting fences and poles, and  head-on crashes. More recently there have also been crashes at intersections.
“There are proven ways we can make this high-risk road much safer to help prevent crashes and support growth, but to get it right, we need the community’s help. The local people who use and live near this road know it better than anyone else. We’re keen to hear their views on what we could change.
“We’d encourage anyone who’s interested to come along and see more about this investigation, and have their say.”

Headline: Protecting the Lewis Pass highway from river erosion, work timed to avoid nesting season

The Department of Conservation (DOC) is working closely with the Agency to minimise the number of beech trees which need to be removed and to protect the wildlife habitat by ensuring the tree felling is well ahead of bird nesting season in September.

Headline: Dunedin to Mosgiel barriers installed making the highway safer for all road users

Safety barriers have been installed down the side of the highway to help prevent run-off road crashes, the median barrier has been extended to help stop head-on crashes, and changes have been made to the SH1/SH87 roundabout at Kinmont to make it easier for over-dimension trucks to manoeuvre.

Headline: Celebration for Redwood and Mairehau: the opening of the CNC Winters Road subway
