The new lane will be created on the Northern Motorway (SH1), from just north of the Auckland Harbour Bridge to the Esmonde Road turnoff, where 130 buses an hour travel in peak time between the city centre and the Northern Expressway.

“With 50-75mm of rain forecast to fall this afternooon and tonight, the NZ Transport Agency decided to close the highway to the north earlier this afternoon. The south side will also close tonight at 8 pm due to concerns around rockfall,” says Transport Agency Network Operations Manager, Tresca Forrester.

The Transport Agency is collaborating with NZ Police, Kāpiti District Council and Porirua City Council on the temporary closure between the State Highway 1 intersection and Grays Road at Pauatahanui, to trial its effectiveness in improving safety and journey times.

  • South of Kaikōura, SH1 will close between Oaro and Peketa. There will be a soft (manned checkpoint) closure at the Leader Road, north of Cheviot, so drivers are aware there will be no access to Kaikōura from the south side of SH1.
  • The northern closure is between Clarence and Mangamaunu.

Initial work to prepare for the repairs will involve minor widening of State Highway 43 Hospital Hill and the formation of an access track to the base of the under slip.

The Transport Agency’s Regional Transport Systems Manager Ross I’Anson says State Highway 43 Hospital Hill has experienced a number of slips over the past few months.

“To repair the slip, we will construct a mechanically stabilised earth (MSE) wall which will also help to prevent further slips.

“The road leading down Hospital Hill is showing signs that it will also slip eventually, so the MSE wall will continue down the hill to prevent this from happening.

“We expect that the MSE wall will be complete by early 2019.”

State Highway 43 Hospital Hill will remain under traffic light and stop/go management while this work is underway.

As a result of the crash, traffic signals are currently not working. Southbound traffic is being diverted via Block Road, while northbound traffic is down to one lane.

It is not clear when the traffic signals will be back up and running. Road users should expect delays or use an alternative route.

Headline: Resealing work for State Highway 2 Masterton postponed

Contractors were set to start resurfacing High Street from Bledisloe Street to north of Ngaumutawa Road on Monday 26 November, with a detour for northbound traffic.

However, road surfacing materials cannot set in wet weather and with more rain forecast again next week, the work will not go ahead at the planned date.

A new date will be publicised as soon as possible.

The signs, known as Intersection Speed Zones, detect when a vehicle is turning into or out of a side road and temporarily reduce the legal speed limit on the state highway (from 100 km/h to either 60km/hr or 70km/h). They also do this when a driver is crossing the state highway from a side road.
