Niger: Security Situation

An attempted coup is underway in Niamey. The situation remains volatile and could escalate without notice. We advise all New Zealanders in Niamey to remain indoors and shelter in place until further notice.

Violent demonstrations have occurred in Niamey and security forces have used tear gas to disperse crowds. There is a heightened military presence near government buildings, including at the Presidential Palace on Boulevard de la République.

Security forces have announced the closure of air and land borders and a nationwide curfew from 12 am to 5 am. Options to leave Niger are currently extremely limited.

We recommend having a contingency plan for departure in place and ensuring you have adequate supplies of food, water, fuel, cash and essential medication stockpiled. International sanctions on Niger may result in shortages of necessities.

Monitor local media coverage, avoid all government buildings and political gatherings and follow the advice of local authorities. Contact your friends and family as soon as possible to let them know that you are safe.

If you require consular assistance, please contact the New Zealand consular emergency number: +64 99 20 20 20.

We encourage all New Zealanders visiting or living in Niger to register their details on SafeTravel.

Mount Holdsworth search continues

Source: New Zealand Police (District News)

The search is resuming today for a man reported missing in the Mount Holdsworth area.

Michael MacGregor was last seen at the Rocky Lookout around 12:20pm on Monday.

An appeal to the public for information that would assist Police has had a great response, and Police are very grateful to all who came forward.

The person wearing orange seen in the back of a social media video posted by Michael has been identified and spoken to by Police, and has provided Police with information that has assisted with search planning.

Police Search and Rescue teams have spent the night in Totara Flats Hut and are being supported by a police search and rescue squad on a training exercise overnight at Tutuwai hut.

Several LandSAR volunteer teams are currently searching, and the operation is being supported by Amateur Radio Emergency Communications volunteers.

Today’s search will focus on the wider Rocky Lookout and the Totara Flats areas.

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter with thermal imaging has been deployed and a drone may be used – however these are both weather-dependent.

A LandSAR dog is currently in use and a Police dog is about to be deployed.

While we are pleased with the public’s response, we’d still welcome anyone who may have seen Michael or who has information to call Police on 111, quoting event number P055522968.

Warning about Class B drug GBL/GHB, Taranaki

Source: New Zealand Police (District News)

Taranaki Police are aware of a number of people overdosing on what is suspected to be the class B controlled drug GHB or GBL or 1,4-BD, commonly referred to as “Wazz”. The overdoses resulted in admissions to Taranaki Base Hospital and have placed undue pressure on the public health system.

The Taranaki District Health Board advise that any person who has taken this drug, and notices symptoms such as loss of consciousness, seizures, increased heart rate, high blood pressure or strange-feeling muscles, are encouraged to present at the hospital emergency department.

You can report drug offending to Police through the crime reporting line by calling 105. Possession of class B controlled drugs is an offence.

New Zealand’s drug early warning system High Alert say while no use is the safest drug use, there are some steps that can help reduce the risks from taking GBL-type substances. These substances all have different potency and onset times which makes it very easy to overdose. Smaller doses pose less risk. Avoid re-dosing, and steer clear of mixing GBL with other substances, especially alcohol and other depressants like ketamine. Find out more about 1,4-and GBL here through High Alert: https://highalert.org.nz/articles/what-is-14-bd/

Police crackdown on retail crime in South Auckland

Source: New Zealand Police (District News)

Police are increasing patrols across southern Auckland’s town centres, putting offenders on notice.

The ongoing retail operation is already gaining results, with some prolific offenders facing dozens of charges.

As part of an ongoing commitment to prevent retail crime, Counties Manukau South Police will run the operation focussing on reducing retail theft in the district.

So far 10 people are facing a total of 59 charges of shoplifting, with more charges expected to be laid in coming days.

Counties Manukau South Area Prevention Manager, Inspector Matt Hoyes says Police will be undertaking high visibility patrols in shopping centres and CBD’s, with a specific focus on supermarkets and other major retailers.

Work will continue with retailers and business on simple steps they can take to prevent their businesses being targeted.

“Police are continuing to take offending against retail businesses in our community seriously, identifying offenders and holding them to account.”

Inspector Hoyes says Police are continuing to work alongside our partners to reduce harm on our town centres and retailers.

“Police and retailers cannot prevent crime alone and rely on the help of the community to stop this illegal activity and the social harm it causes.

“Our high visibility patrols in shopping malls and along shopping strips also allow Police to interact with the public who want to see an end to this type of crime in their neighbourhood. By working together we can make our district a place where everybody can be safe and feel safe,” Inspector Hoyes says.

A 39-year-old woman is facing a total of 24 charges relating to shoplifting and trespassing and will appear in Pukekohe District Court on 26 September.

A 28-year-old female will appear in Papakura District Court on 3 August after attempting to leave a supermarket with a trolley full of goods without paying on 25 July.

A 32-year-old woman has been referred to Te Pae Oranga after attempting to steal $91 worth of groceries in her backpack on 24 July.

Counties Manukau Police encourage members of the public to report suspicious behaviour in and around shops and malls to a member of staff, security or Police to prevent retail theft.

People are encouraged to continue report offending as it is occurring by calling 111, or to report matters after the fact by calling 105.

Reports can also be made online by going to https://www.police.govt.nz/use-105 or anonymously by calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
