Auckland Police monitor gang movements for funeral

Source: New Zealand Police (District News)

Please attribute to Inspector Richard Sami, Auckland City Police:

Police are deploying additional staff across parts of Auckland to monitor movements of gang members today.

This is in relation to a funeral taking place this afternoon, and Police will be ensuring that our expectations on the behaviour of those attending are met.

Those movements are expected to take place between Mt Eden and Papakura.

A range of Police staff will be deployed across this area, recording any instances of unlawful behaviour and there will be a checkpoint in Papakura.

Our expectations are very clear in these sorts of events, and we have zero tolerance for poor behaviour.

Where those participants chose to employ poor driving or general behaviour, they can expect follow up enforcement action.

Our aim is for the least amount of disruption to the public today.

We encourage the public to report any instances of unlawful activity on the road to us, so we can take appropriate action.

Please contact 111 if it is happening now, or report other matters to Police by calling 105 or going online to https://www.police.govt.nz/use-105

Police disrupt burglaries near Papakura

Source: New Zealand Police (District News)

Police patrols in Takanini thwarted the getaway of two offenders who had allegedly just carried out a burglary.

Early this morning, at around 1.45am, a unit was deployed on Great South Road.

Counties Manukau South Area Commander, Inspector Joe Hunter says the officers noticed a fog cannon had activated in a block of shops.

“Upon further inspection the fog cannon had activated at a vape store and its alarm was sounding.

“Our staff located two young males walking away from the area and they were stopped.”

The pair had allegedly managed to force their way into the store.

“While they had managed to get into the store, the activation of the fog cannon has forced them to leave the store,” Inspector Hunter says.

“We have since recovered items that were taken from the store, including cash.”

The pair, aged 16 and 17, have since been referred to Youth Aid.

Meanwhile, Police also arrested a 23-year-old man following a burglary at a Papakura charity shop earlier in the night.

“Our staff responded to a report at around 10.30pm from the public who had seen suspicious activity occurring at the store.”

Police arrived on scene on O’Shannessey Street and took the man into custody.

Police continue to take offending against businesses seriously and are holding offenders accountable, Inspector Hunter says.

“Alongside our regular deployments, we are continuing to conduct high visibility patrols across Counties Manukau South around shopping malls and shopping strips.”

Police use new legislation in response to Manawatu gang tensions

Source: New Zealand Police (National News)

To be attributed to Inspector Ross Grantham, Manawatū Area Commander

Police have escalated their efforts to target gang anti-social and violent behaviour in the Manawatū, invoking new legislation to disrupt gang activity.

Today Police have arrested three men with gang links in relation to possession of firearms and ammunition after a vehicle was stopped in Feilding this morning around 3.20am. All three men will be appearing before the Palmerston North District Court facing a variety of charges.

Police have invoked the use of the Criminal Activity Intervention Legislation Act (CAIL) 2023 in the Manawatū area providing police with search warrant powers to search vehicles and the occupants of vehicles of suspected gang members and to seize their weapons during times of conflict. The new powers became law in April 2023 and while focussed specifically on gangs, we intend to use them prudently.

Extra staff have been brought into the area and are providing high-visibility reassurance patrols to the Palmerston North community after what is believed to be a gang-related shooting led to the death of a man at a Croydon Road address on Sunday afternoon.

Our community can expect to see Police continuing to respond to any unlawful behaviour by anyone who believes that they are above the law.
We are sending a clear message to all gangs and the wider community that Police do not tolerate unlawful behaviour and will work hard to hold people to account.

People can report any incident in which their safety or that of others is at risk by calling 111 immediately. If it’s happened in the past, please contact 105.

You can also share information anonymously through Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.
