Police acknowledge IPCA’s finding in Palmerston North arrest

Source: New Zealand Police (National News)

Police acknowledge the IPCA’s findings into the arrest of a man for disorderly behaviour in Palmerston North in July 2021.

Police were called about 6.25pm on 2 July to an intersection where a man, Mr Z, was behaving aggressively and erratically.

Mr Z was placed under arrest for disorderly conduct, however resisted arrest and Police used force, including a Police dog, to restrain him.

The IPCA determined Police’s use of force was reasonable and justified.

Central District Commander Superintendent Scott Fraser says this was a fast-moving incident involving an individual who was known to have a history of assaulting Police and carrying weapons, and who had been involved in a threatening incident a short time earlier that evening.

“Police need to make quick decisions in difficult situations to keep themselves and the wider public safe.

“The offender was behaving in an aggressive and unpredictable way, and our staff determined it was necessary to take him into custody to keep themselves and the public safe.”

Queen Street homicide: Police carry out search warrants, seek vehicle of interest

Source: New Zealand Police (National News)

Police have conducted a series of search warrants as part of the ongoing homicide investigation into a shooting that occurred on Queen Street this month.

Today’s search warrants targeted associates of Dariush Talagi, who is wanted to arrest for murder and wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Detective Senior Sergeant Craig Bolton says one arrest has been made today.

“The investigation team terminated search warrants at four properties in Māngere, Manurewa, Manukau and Papakura.

“One man has been arrested as a result and our enquiries will continue.”

The 32-year-old man has been charged with unlawful possession of ammunition and is expected in the Manukau District Court on 22 August.

Meanwhile, Police are releasing details of a vehicle of interest connected to the investigation.

Information about the whereabouts of this vehicle is being sought as part of the investigation, Detective Senior Sergeant Bolton says.

“Police believe this vehicle is in the Northland region and likely in a rural area.

“We need to hear from anyone who knows where this vehicle might be, and who the occupants seen travelling in this vehicle are.”

The vehicle is a 2006 black BMW X6 with the registration KLU568.

The investigation team are continuing its work to locate 24-year-old Talagi since the events of 3 August on Queen Street.

“Talagi should be considered dangerous and we advise the public to not approach him, but instead call Police on 111 straight away,” Detective Senior Sergeant Bolton says.

“Our investigation team remains committed to locating Talagi and holding him to account for his actions that night on Queen Street.

“It is only a matter of time, and I continue to remind anyone who is assisting Talagi that being an accessory after the fact is a criminal offence.”

Anyone with additional information to assist the investigation, or information on the vehicle of interest should contact Police on 105 quoting the file number 230804/3399.

Information can also be provided anonymously through Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.

Update: search for Marokopa family

Source: New Zealand Police (District News)

Police are now able to release new details about the recent sightings of Tom Phillips.

On Wednesday 2 August, Tom was sighted at two Bunnings stores in Waikato.

In the early afternoon, Tom was sighted at Bunnings South on Kahikatea Drive where he purchased various equipment.

Later that afternoon at around 4pm, he was sighted at Bunnings in Te Rapa where he made further purchases.

He used a large amount of cash to make these purchases and the items purchased suggest that Tom may have set up a campsite.

These items include headlamps, batteries, seedlings, buckets and gumboots.

Police are following all available lines of enquiry and are continuing to ask people with new information to come forward.

Our priority is, and has always been, working to locate Tom and the children to ensure their welfare, and we have continued to follow up on information reported to us where relevant.

We know Tom has been sighted at retail locations across the Waikato region, but we need people to stay alert and to contact Police immediately if they become suspicious.

We also urge people not to take any action themselves – to call 111 with immediate or current information or 105 for past information that needs to be followed up. Please cite file number 211218/5611.

Police have also set up a dedicated email address for members of the public to report any information they may have – op.curly@police.govt.nz
