Te Pae Oranga partnership welcomed in Tāmaki

Source: New Zealand Police (National News)

A new Te Pae Oranga partnership between Ruapōtaka Marae and Auckland City District Police has been welcomed into the Tāmaki communities today.

Te Pae Oranga (formerly Iwi Community Panels) provides an Iwi-led restorative alternative to court that responds to offending and addresses the harm caused, while also helping people to turn their lives around.

Auckland City Eastern Area Prevention Manager, Rachel Dolheguy, said the partnership with Ruapōtaka Marae is greatly valued.

“Through Te Pae Oranga we are working together to reduce reoffending and victimisation and to support safer communities.”

“Te Pae Oranga is for all people, from all ethnicities, and all walks of life and bringing the panels to Ruapōtaka Marae is a natural fit.”

Ruapōtaka Marae CEO, Georgie Thompson, said the approach aligns closely with their collaborative, community focused principles of a mataawaka marae for all people, to support whānau in Tāmaki.

The panels began running in June this year, and already more than 20 people have been referred for theft and driving related offending.

Te Pae Oranga processes can be quite confronting, Georgie Thompson said.
Through the processes victims and offenders tell their story and start along a restorative pathway.

“People are held accountable for their actions and must take responsibility.  The panel works with the person and victim if there is one, to agree a plan of actions moving forward that addresses the harm and looks at underlying issues that may be contributing to offending behaviours,” Georgie Thompson said.

Deputy Commissioner Iwi and Communities, Wallace Haumaha, said investing in prevention is key to prevent reoffending and Police is pleased to see Te Pae Oranga continue to grow.

“We are committed to working together through trusted partnerships to find solutions that improve social wellbeing and outcomes for all.”

“Te Pae Oranga is an Iwi Māori-led solution that requires accountability while also uplifting people towards achieving their aspirations – and choosing a path away from courts and prisons.”
The celebration hosted by Ruapōtaka Marae to welcome Te Pae Oranga was attended by iwi, community leaders and Police on 18 August 2023.

Ruapōtaka Marae works in collaboration with the three iwi of the area Ngai Tai Ki Tāmaki, Ngāti Pāoa and Ngāti Whatua to support whānau in Tāmaki.

Te Pae Oranga is supported by Māori leaders across Aotearoa, including the Māori King, Te Kiingi Tuuheitia Te Wherowhero VII, who is the programme’s patron.

Pay attention at railway level crossings

Source: New Zealand Police (District News)

Wellington District Police are urging drivers to pay attention around railway level crossings – and to always obey the signs and warning systems in place.

On 24 July, a driver was seriously injured when their car was struck by a train at a crossing on Norfolk Road, Waingawa, between Carterton and Masterton.

Initial enquiries have established that the driver attempted to drive across the railway track despite the warning lights and bells signalling an oncoming train.

A temporary stop sign is now in place at the Norfolk Road crossing, and officers have been dismayed this week to observe many drivers failing to stop at the stop sign.

After officers observed some concerning behaviour at the crossing earlier this week – including not only failing to stop, but using a cellphone while driving across the tracks – an enforcement operation was carried out on Thursday 17 August.

16 drivers were issued infringement notices after failing to stop at the stop sign before crossing the railway track.

“I can’t emphasise enough how vital it is for drivers and other road users to always obey signage, bells, lights and barriers when they cross railway tracks,” says Inspector Brad Allen, Wellington Road Policing Manager.

“And where there aren’t bells, light and barriers, drivers must always look both ways and ensure it is safe before proceeding across the tracks.”

“You should be checking for trains when you cross railway tracks, the same way you check for cars when they cross a road – there really is no room to get it wrong.”

Arrests made, cash seized, in Gisborne operation targeting methamphetamine supply

Source: New Zealand Police (District News)

Attributable to Detective Inspector Darrin Thompson, National Organised Crime Group:

Two men have been arrested following several search warrants executed in Gisborne this week.

The National Organised Crime Group (NOCG) have led 13 search warrants at Gisborne commercial and residential addresses this week, nine on Monday 14 August and four on Wednesday 16 August.

The focus of the operation was to disrupt the supply of methamphetamine into the Gisborne community and reduce the impact and harm it is causing.

Two 36-year-old men from Hawke’s Bay appeared in Gisborne District Court on Wednesday on charges relating to the supply of methamphetamine and cannabis as well as one charge of possession of ammunition.

One is due to reappear on 6 September, the other at a later date.

Approximately 1.8kg of cannabis, 47 rounds of ammunition, and approximately $40,000 in cash were located and seized in the termination.

Gisborne Police have had a significant presence in the community over the past few days, engaging with locals and providing reassurance around our activities.

This proactive activity in the community continues to be a part of our focus on organised crime and gang harm in Hawke’s Bay and Tairawhiti.

Police encourage anyone with information about illegal activity taking place in their community to contact 105, or Crime Stoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Police highly visible across parts of Tāmaki Makaurau this weekend

Source: New Zealand Police (National News)

Please attribute to Assistant Commissioner: Tāmaki Makaurau, Sam Hoyle:

Police will be highly visible in parts of Auckland over the coming days to monitor gang movements relating to a funeral taking place.

The community can expect to see additional Police resource deployed around known gang locations in Ellerslie, Onehunga and Papatoetoe this weekend.

Police expectations on acceptable behaviour are very clear and we will be targeting any anti-social or violent behaviour taking place.

Police will also be highly visible around licensed premises and on our roads.

While we understand people need to grieve, this should be done without putting the wider community’s safety at risk. It is the family’s wishes that everyone pays their respects peacefully.

The community’s safety is paramount for Police and our expectations are that everyone attending will abide by the rules. Those who chose to unlawfully disrupt the community, or put them at risk, will be held to account.

Over the coming weeks, Police will continue to conduct visible disruption and enforcement activity in response to the fatal events in Pt England on 5 August.

Police will also be working with other parties on long-term solutions required around any tensions between gangs.

We encourage the public to report any instances of unlawful behaviour as it happens by contact 111.

People can also report incidents to Police to follow up by calling 105 or going online to https://www.police.govt.nz/use-105

If you wish to report unlawful activity anonymously, please contact Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.
