Homicide investigation launched, Ngāruawāhia

Police have commenced a homicide investigation into the death of a 42-year-old woman in Ngāruawāhia this afternoon.

About 1.30pm, Police were alerted to a number people fighting on Waipa Esplanade, near the intersection of Newton Street. Sometime later, a critically injured woman was taken to the ambulance station on Jordan Street. Despite the best efforts of first responders, the woman died before she could be airlifted to hospital.

Scene examinations are in progress on Waipa Esplanade, where the woman may have been injured, and at the Jordan Street location where she died.

There is a large Police presence in the area, which will continue as our enquiries progress. We know these events are unsettling for our communities and those involved, and officers will be carrying out reassurance patrols in the area.

Serious crash, Kawhia – Waikato

Emergency services are currently at the scene of a two-vehicle crash on Kawhia Road, Hauturu, Otorohanga about 2.20pm today.

Initial reports indicate there have been serious injuries.

The road is currently blocked and traffic management is in place.

The diversions are at Harbour Road east side and Te Rauamoa Road, west bound.

Motorists are asked to please avoid the area, and expect delays.

SH25 Thames-Coromandel now open but delays very likely

“Road open following serious crash, State Highway 25, Thames-Coromandel

SH25, between Thames and Coromandel, has now reopened after this morning’s fatal crash.

Police thank motorists for their patience travelling on both SH25a and SH25 as there may be lengthy delays clearing the backlog of traffic.

Enquiries into the circumstances of the crash are ongoing.

Serious incident, Ngaruawahia

Police have cordons at two scenes in Ngaruawahia this afternoon, following a disorder incident.

About 1.30pm, Police were alerted to several people fighting on Waipa Esplanade, near the intersection with Newton Street. Several minutes later, a critically injured person was taken to an ambulance station on Jordan Street.

There is a large Police presence in the area, and cordons are in place at both scenes.

Members of the public are asked to avoid the area.

Enquiries are under way and more information will be provided proactively when it becomes available.

Traffic delays on SH25a Coromandel due closure on SH25 after earlier fatal

Traffic is building up on SH25a Coromandel Peninsula due to the fatal crash that occurred this morning just before 9am on SH25.

Motorists are asked to avoid travelling in the next few hours on SH25a due to the current 90 minute delay on this route.

The delay is between Kopu and Tairua and motorists are asked to postpone their travel if possible as SH25 is still not re-opened after the crash.

Avoid Gisborne Hill Road Lookout, Hawke’s Bay – Eastern

Police are advising motorists to avoid the Wharerata Road area due to high winds.

The road is impassable due to trees down in many places.

Police urge motorists to avoid the area if possible and only travel in this area if it’s essential to do so.

SH 18 now clear

State Highway 18 is now clear of Canadian Geese.

Officers managed to shepherd the birds back through the fence alongside the road.

Three alleged shoplifters to appear in court, Albany

Three men are before the courts following a shoplifting incident in Albany.

At around 1.50pm on Thursday 26 December, Police were called to a store on Greville Road after two people had taken a number of items without paying.

The pair left the area in a vehicle driven by a third person heading northbound towards East Coast Road.

A short time later the vehicle was seen by Police parked on Greville Road.

As Police took the three men into custody, an officer sighted what was believed to be the stolen merchandise from the store and searched the vehicle.

Upon the search, police located and seized around $2700 worth of clothing, perfumes, food products, and toys. All of these items have been returned to their respective stores.

Enquiries are ongoing into the matter and further charges have not been ruled out at this time.

A 33-year-old man is due to appear in North Shore District Court today, charged with shoplifting.

A 31-year-old man is due to appear in North Shore District Court today, charged with aggravated assault and two counts of shoplifting.

And a 34-year-old man is due to appear in North Shore District Court on Monday 6 January, charged with shoplifting.

Update: Man missing in water in Ōhope

A search for a man missing in the water in Ōhope is continuing today.

Police are utilising all resources available to assist with the search, and are also working to support the man’s family. 

The Police National Dive Squad travelled to Ōhope yesterday and joined the search, and have deployed again today.

LandSAR volunteers have been conducting shoreline searches, and Police are also undertaking air-based searches.

Police are extremely grateful to all involved, including the wider Ōhope and Whakatāne communities, for the support provided to the search effort to date.

A rāhui remains in place on Ohiwa Harbour, including the Port Ōhope wharf, until further notice.

SH 18 near Constellation Drive on-ramp blocked

Motorists travelling on State Highway 18, near the Constellation Drive on-ramp, are asked to drive with caution.

Police have been made aware of a significant number of Canadian Geese on the road.

Officers have been deployed to try and clear the road, but for now, motorists should drive with caution in the area.
