Sapper Brooking Poi is now in the NZ Army having studied the NZ Certificate in Study and Employment Pathways (Services Pathway) (Level 3) at EIT Tairāwhiti.

A former EIT student, who used the services pathway programme to prepare for a career in the NZ Army, is now learning a trade that he can take back home to the East Coast after he leaves the Army.

Sapper Brooking Poi’s (Ngāti Porou, Ngāpuhi, Ngāti Tūmatuenga) journey to success is  a positive one and is helping to promote the benefits of study to potential students in his East Coast community.

Brooking, 19, was born in Gisborne but spent his childhood in Ruatoria before finishing his schooling at Lytton’ High School. He was always keen to join the NZ Army and was told by Zac Te Maro, a tutor at EIT, that he should go to the Army and the best way to prepare for it was to do a programme at EIT. It was worth the effort as he completed the NZ Certificate in Study and Employment Preparation (Services Pathway) (Level 3) at EIT Tairāwhiti.

He says that he enjoyed the programme due to the working environments and with their high quality of standards.

He says being fit helped as well, which he had done by weight lifting and touch rugby. Brooking is currently on sick leave, having dislocated his shoulder. He is based at Linton Army Base in Palmerston North, where he is doing a plumbing trade.

“I would like to go back home, especially back in Tairāwhiti, where we don’t have many plumbers and help out the Kaumatua.”

He says the apprenticeship he is doing in the Army is teaching him plumbing, gas fitting and drain laying. Having signed up to the Army, Brooking has to stay there for eight years, but he believes that he will stay on a bit longer and get all his licences. He even has ideas to trade change after his apprenticeship to gain more knowledge.

He says that studying further after school was always something he wanted to do.

“It was just the way I was raised. Put your head down and do the mahi and you get the treats later.. Not only did I have mates at EIT , but tutors were nice and they were very respectful to us.”

EIT Trades and Technology Head of School, Todd Rogers, says: “It is great to see Brooking pathway through to the NZ Army following the path carved by other members of his whānau.”

School students from the East Coast were given a taste of the future at a successful discovery day organised by EIT’s Education 2 Employment team.

School students from the East Coast were given a taste of the future at a successful discovery day held at Ngata College in Ruatoria recently.

The event, organised by EIT’s Education 2 Employment team, saw hundreds of students from the region get a chance to engage with tertiary institutes, pathway providers and employers.

Education 2 Employment (e2e) encourages the coordination and support of employers and the local business community to be involved in vocational education, employment and development opportunities for young people. The primary goal of the e2e programme is to help connect industry with schools so that students can identify possible career pathways.

Twenty-seven organisations were represented at the event in Ruatoria last month. While the event was aimed at senior school students, year seven and eight and even younger students also attended.

Among the companies and organisations attending to connect with the students were local and regional businesses, Government agencies like IRD, and educational institutes including EIT and others from outside the region.

Adrianna Wilson, Education 2 Employment Advisor for EIT Tairāwhiti, says that the aim of the event was to expose students to what opportunities were out there.

“We wanted them to see that there are local employers and ones further afield who can offer them a pathway to a career of their choice.”

“For an example, we had Mātai Medical Research Institute there, so if a student was interested in going into that career, what’s the pathway for them?”

School students from the East Coast were given a taste of the future at a successful discovery day organised by EIT’s Education 2 Employment team.

Adrianna says the event was staged in a way that engaged the students and got them interested in potential careers.

“Every employer or business had an interactive activity. Some had honey pots representing apiculture, civil infrastructure had roading games, the police services had drug goggles and were in their police cars. We also had a Media House there which did portraits of the students, STEM were there doing science activities, and we had the Department of Conservation discussing survival, trapping and other outdoor skills.”

“We also had a game where they were given a bingo card with symbols that represented each employer or industry. And they had to go and either ask questions or do the interactive activity and get it ticked off by the employer. At the end, they all got a prize if they filled their bingo card. They had to ask questions and engage.”

Adrianna says the aim is to make the event an annual occurrence.

“It is a rewarding time for both students and participating organisations as the students get to see what career opportunities there are and employers are exposed to the talent coming through.”

EIT | Te Pūkenga student Angus Bodle is the Valedictorian at the Tairāwhiti Campus graduation ceremony at the War Memorial Theatre in Gisborne on Friday.

EIT | Te Pūkenga Tairāwhiti Valedictorian Angus Bodle’s academic journey began when he attended Trades Academy as a school student and comes to a conclusion as he graduates with a Bachelor of Computing Systems on Friday.

He will be part of a cohort of students at the graduation ceremony at the War Memorial Theatre in Gisborne on Friday.

Angus, 21, says he was surprised when told that he had been chosen as EIT | Te Pūkenga Tairāwhiti Valedictorian as he had not been expecting it.

He is looking forward to graduating with a Bachelor of Computing Systems, majoring in Intelligent  Systems. Supporting him on the day will be his family.

Born and bred in Tairāwhiti, Angus’ interest in computers stems back to when he was a student at Gisborne Intermediate School, trading his lunchtimes for spending time in the IT shed with his friends.

He enrolled in the computing programme in Trades Academy at the Tairāwhiti Campus while in year 12 and 13 at Lytton High School.

“I knew I wanted to study computing, but it was Trades Academy that assured me that EIT was the right place to study.”

Angus said that he found the programme enjoyable, but it did have its “ups and downs”, thanks to COVID-19 and Cyclone Gabrielle.

“We had to deal with remote learning for COVID-19 and also for the cyclone, because a whole lot of stuff wasn’t working at campus. It really was a challenge for us and for EIT.”

For Angus, a highlight of the programme was the “hands-on learning”.

“For me, the best reason to study the BCS at EIT is that you have that one-on-one time with your tutor, not like when you’re at a big university and there’s 1,000 students in your class.”

EIT | Te Pūkenga Senior IT Lecturer Tina Blumenthal said: “The past three years has been a tough ride, first with COVID and then Cyclone Gabrielle. And as one of the School of Computing lecturers, I congratulate all our BCS graduates for keeping the faith and demonstrating resilience in achieving their goals. It’s been a unique situation, but also a privilege to share the learning journey with this cohort.”

“Angus is an outstanding academic achiever who enthusiastically welcomed every opportunity to learn and develop professionally, both in class and by engaging with the sponsorship team in his internship. He has a wealth of talent, knowledge and skills, and is a shining star in our programme. I am sure he will be successful in his chosen career.”

“Angus has earned his achievements, and EIT School of Computing team acknowledge and thank him, with great pride, for accepting the role of Valedictorian for his graduation ceremony.”

The EIT | Te Pūkenga Hawke’s Bay campus will be open for an information and enrolment day between 9am and 6pm on Thursday, 25 January 2024.

Prospective learners have an opportunity identify a career path from many on offer at an EIT | Te Pūkenga information and enrolment day to be held at the Hawke’s Bay Campus this week.

The information day on Thursday 25 January will be another opportunity for the partially rebuilt campus to be showcased after it was devastated by Cyclone Gabrielle a year ago. The cyclone caused extensive damage to the Taradale site in February with up to 90 per cent of the ground-floor buildings – more than 500 rooms – being damaged by flood water and contaminated silt.

About 30 per cent of the Hawke’s Bay campus was able to be reopened for delivery in time for the start of Semester 2 in July.

The information and enrolment day is open to anyone who is interested in studying at EIT | Te Pūkenga and who would like more information about what programmes are on offer.

The event will be held between 9am and 6pm at the EIT | Te Pūkenga Hawke’s Bay Campus. Events will also be held on the same day between 10am and 2pm at the Maraenui, Hastings and CHB  Learning Centres. An information day will be held at the Wairoa Learning Centre on 31 January between 10am and 2pm. 

EIT | Te Pūkenga Executive Director Glen Harkness says a lot of hard work has been done to ensure the they were able to reopen much of the campus.

“We are part of this community and it is important that people are able to see what we have to offer.”

The day is open to anyone who is interested in studying at EIT | Te Pūkenga and who would like more information about what programmes are on offer.

The event will be held on 11 October between 9am and 6pm at the EIT | Te Pūkenga Tairāwhiti Campus, while prospective students (ākonga) are welcome to go to the Wairoa and Ruatoria Learning Centres between 10am and 2pm on the same day.
