The owner of a pet food company was given 6 months’ community detention, 180 hours’ of community work, and banned from owning or exercising any authority over production animals for 5 years at the Hamilton District Court today. His company was sentenced to pay a $90,000 fine.

The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) today removed the public health warning for the collection of shellfish from Akaroa Harbour, Banks Peninsula. Toxins in shellfish from this area have now fallen to levels below the safe limit set by MPI.

The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) today extended the public health warning against collecting shellfish on the west coast of the North Island in the Taranaki, Waikato, Wanganui, Manawatu, and Horowhenua regions. The warning now extends from the mouth of Port Waikato southward to Te Horo Beach in the Wellington region.

The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) today extended the public health warning against collecting shellfish on the west coast of the North Island in the Taranaki and Waikato region. The warning now extends from the mouth of Port Waikato southward to Ohawe in the Taranaki region. The alert also includes Aotea and Kawhia Harbours but not Port Waikato itself.

The warning extends from Raglan, including Raglan Harbour, southward to Urenui. The alert also includes Aotea and Kawhia Harbours.

Today, the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) started work to eradicate salvinia, one of the world’s worst aquatic weeds, from the Wairakei Stream at Papamoa. Salvinia is an unwanted organism and notifiable organism under the Biosecurity Act, meaning that it is illegal to grow or share plants.

New Zealand Food Safety (a unit of the Ministry for Primary Industries) has today published the results for the 2016 New Zealand Total Diet Study (TDS), which shows the food New Zealanders eat has a high level of safety in regard to chemical hazards which might be present in the food supply.  Exposure to agricultural chemicals and contaminants from food remains low, and for the first time in 2 decades, our dietary intake of iodine is sufficient for good health.

The Ministry for Primary Industries today issued a public health warning against collecting shellfish in the Hawke’s Bay region from Cape Kidnappers to the north end of Māhanga Beach near Māhia due to paralytic shellfish toxins being detected at levels of concern.
