Home LDC Fellowship applications are open

LDC Fellowships support high potential mid to senior leaders across the Public Service to identify system leadership challenges and opportunities, and undertake research and study to address these. Each LDC Fellowship provides up to NZ$50,000 for travel, accommodation and/or development activities.

Applications open 1 May and close 30 June 2025.

We also strongly encourage joint applications from multiple agencies to demonstrate the cross-system collaborative approach to public sector leadership. 

All applications require chief executive approval and supporting reports from two referees

We’ve moved to 1 Bowen St!

2025 Ria McBride Public Service Award

Ria McBride Public Service Award applications open 1 April.

The Ria McBride Public Service Award helps women currently working in the New Zealand Public Service to progress their career aspirations through tertiary study. The recipient of the 2025 Ria McBride Award will receive funding up to $15,000 for study purposes to use over a five-year period.

The Ria McBride Public Service Award is sponsored by Te Kawa Mataaho Public Service Commission and is administered by the Leadership Development Centre (LDC).

The spirit of the Award is to support women who demonstrate personal fortitude and leadership potential, and who generally haven’t had the opportunity or means to pursue or complete tertiary study. This lack of formal qualifications may have prevented such applicants from progressing their leadership contribution to the Public Service.

ANZSOG Executive Fellows Program nominations

Nominations for New Zealand public servants to attend the Australia and New Zealand School of Government (ANZSOG) Executive Fellows Program (EFP) open 18 March.

On behalf of Head of Public Service, the Leadership Development Centre co-ordinates agency nominations for the ANZSOG EFP.

Nominations require chief executive endorsement.

Executive Fellows Program (EFP)

EFP is designed exclusively for senior public sector executives. The program challenges leaders to develop new perspectives in a highly interactive setting while exploring contemporary issues. This year, ANZSOG are offering a single cohort mid-year.

The upcoming EFP The program will commence with an orientation session on 7 July 2025, 9am-12pm AEST, online via Zoom and consist of 2 modules, both held in Australia:

  • Module 1: 14 July -18 July 2025, face-to-face in Sydney
  • Module 2: 21 July -25 July 2025, face-to-face in Brisbane

ANZSOG are holding an online information session on 26 March at 6.30-7.15pm NZ time. Register and find out more about the event on the ANZSOG website.

Closing date for expressions of interest to LDC

We are working with the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) to manage the nominations and selection process for Public Service spaces on the NZDF leadership development programmes.

Nominations for round 7 programmes open 3 March and close 18 April 2025.

Public Services spaces available 

  • 12 Public Service spaces across 3 cohorts of the Lead Systems Leadership Programme.
  • 8 Public Service spaces across 2 cohorts of the Lead Capability Leadership Programme.
  • 4 Public Service spaces on 1 cohort of the Lead Integrated Capability Leadership Programme.

Te Putanga | Leadership in Practice in our flagship 9 month development programme for experienced Public Service leaders who are ready to transform their leadership impact and grow strategic influence across the Public Service. It is an immersive, whole self development experience that challenges you to deepen your self-awareness, mindsets and skills to unlock your leadership effectiveness and impact.

We draw on leadership practices from te ao Māori, the Pacific and the world to support you to reflect on who you are as a leader and what is emerging from within you.

Executive Leader Development Programme 2025

Applications are now open for the Executive Leader Development Programme 2025. Our 9-month learning journey for experienced tier 2-3 leaders.

Now more than ever, New Zealand Public Service leaders are being called upon to lead in a way that delivers results and navigates current challenges whilst also looking ahead at future risks and uncertainties. They need to be bold, clear, calm, and connected to themselves and each other across the system so they can deliver in an increasingly complex, ever changing and fast paced Aotearoa and global context. 

Through immersive residentials, practical development experiences, coaching and workshops leaders will hone their leadership practice collectively and individually.

Spaces are limited with nominations closing 21 March 2025. The 2025 cohort starts mid-May 2025 and finishes February 2026.

New Zealand Harkness Fellowship applications now open

The New Zealand Harkness Fellowship is for a high potential senior leader in any field of study or vocation (excluding health care policy and practice) to study or research in the US for between 3-6 months.

A New Zealand Harkness Fellowship, worth up to NZ$70,000, is being offered in 2025 (for travel in mid-late 2025) to a leader currently employed in the New Zealand Public Sector.  The length and total value of the Fellowship will be determined by the LDC and Harkness Trust Board, in conjunction with the successful applicant.

Applications are now open and will close 5pm, 31 March 2025.
